Twins Acquire Bret Boone
Twins Give Up Player-To-Be-Named-Later

Bret BooneThe Twins wanted him, and he wanted to join the Twins.  The question was, could a trade be worked out?  The answer was finally yes, as the Twins completed a trade with the Seattle Mariners to acquire the services of the 36 year old second baseman.

Stuck on a losing team in Seattle, Boone's numbers fell this year.  Seattle decided to go with youngster Jose Lopez at second base as part of their rebuilding effort, and Boone didn't fit into their long term plans, so he was designated for assignment July 3rd.  Boone is batting just .231 this season with 15 doubles, seven homers, and 34 RBI in 74 games.  Many scouts, however, feel moving to a winning team like Minnesota will help elevate his numbers.

Whether or not Boone provides an offensive spark for the Twins, his presence in the infield is sure to bolster the Twins defense immediately. Minnesota has lacked a veteran presence in the infield, something Boone can bring. His four Glove Glove awards will be a welcome addition to an uncharacteristically shaky Twins infield. His presence should help instill confidence in the young players around him, as well as instilling confidence in the pitching staff.

If he can return to his offensive form as well, he will be a big boost to a Twins offense that has struggled. Boone has hit 20 or more homers in six of his last seven seasons. He is 6th all-time among second basemen in home runs. In his best season, 2001, he hit .331 with 37 HR and 141 RBI. Interestingly enough, he did that after being called washed up and past his prime, so it’s not impossible to think another hot spurt could be possible. Twins fans sure hope so.

The Mariners are believed to be picking up virtually all of the remainder of his contract for this season. Boone will be in uniform for the Twins Thursday vs the Anaheim Angels.
