Thelen's Big Chance

Former #1 Pick Battling for Hockey Life

Entering the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, the Minnesota Wild had one glaring need in its system: defensemen. With the #12 selection in the draft, Minnesota attempted to plug that hole with the selection of Minnesota Native A.J. Thelen, who was coming off a fantastic freshman WCHA season. His 11 goals were third in the nation among freshmen, and earned him All-American Second Team honors, the only freshman to earn that recognition. All signs pointed to another great selection by the Wild staff, whose scouting department has been much lauded, led by ace Tommy Thompson (not the former governor). However, a disastrous sophomore year sent Thelen’s career spiraling downward at an unbelievable rate. Kicked off the Michigan State team, Thelen ended up playing in the WHL, but allowed his personal problems to affect his play on the ice, resulting in poor defensive play and a drop completely off the prospect radar. more…

Vikings 2007: A Look Ahead

Predictions of Doom and Gloom Overdone

The 2007 Vikings season kicks off today. After a severely disappointing season where new coach Brad Childress took “the best situation” among coaching vacancies and turned it into a 6-10 season, the Vikes look to turn the page and find more success in 2007. They will do so with Tavaris Jackson at the helm at quarterback. Jackson is green, raw, and gets no respect in the media or on the other sideline. Pundits are already predicting that recently acquired Kelly Holcomb will take over by midseason, predicting Jackson will find himself in over his head and unable to adjust to the NFL tempo.
Meanwhile, the ground game will become the focus of opposing defenses as first round selection Adrian Peterson teams with Chester Taylor, who had a successful first season as a starter last year, to form a potent 1-2 punch running the football. Both backs also catch the ball well, creating short options in the passing game for Jackson. Will they be enough to lead the Vikes offense to points?
Here’s what MSPSports.com predicts will happen in the 2007 season for the Vikes:

2006-07 Three Stars Standings

Year-to-date Results of MSP Sports Three Stars Contest

The Three Stars contest is a game of skill where Wild fans select three WILD players each game who they think could be named a "Star of the Game." Getting one of the players right earns you one point. If you get the correct player in the correct star place (i.e. Gaborik as #2 star), you get a 3 point bonus for a total of 4 points possible per player. A three point bonus is also available for correctly predicting the final score.

With a revamped Wild roster, this year's game should be more challenging than ever.

Good luck!

Draft Day Trade, Free Agent Signings Big for Wild

Team finally shakes expansion look

Through five seasons of play, the Minnesota Wild have had a hard time shaking the look of being an expansion team. While Marian Gaborik has been a bright star for the Wild, and they have had some mild success with mid-level free agents, the team has continued to recycle players who haven’t been successful in the NHL in hopes of finding some untapped talent. The result: four of their first five seasons have been mediocre at best. The only positive during that span was the one surprise run to the Western Conference Finals. Otherwise, Wild fans have paid big bucks to watch a very average product on the ice. more…
